[2nd witness] Eddie Shell being sworn says. He was assisting J.A. Burdett carring [sic] Charles Williams to Jail when at the branch above Mr. W.E. Grists some men rushed out in the road and ordered us to Halt. Mr Burdett said to them what do you mean they made no replt the first I knew they was two or three around me and had Mr Burdett down they took the rope after so many I asked Mr Burdett what shall we do the crowd said get away or we will serve you the same as the prinsoner... there was twelve or fifteen all over the road heard firing also after we got some half mile away... [3rd witness] J.A. Roelgers being sworn says... I approached the boddy [sic] and found it to be the dead boddy [sic] of a negro man shot through the head...
