Evidence of John M. Woodward. Sworns Says, the first occurance, I rode to the House of M.r Holiday, there I met a negro, (Holiday Called Moses) coming runing up from the still, I asked him where Holiday was, said, He is after Negro, that refuses to be taken--and makes fight at him, at this time head a gun fire, said the Boy Moses "that is M.r Holiday now," I remarked I can taken him having with me two good Dogs, I started in a swift gate to go his assistance and saw Holiday Coming back, Myself and the Boy Moses, got to Holiday about the same time, He going one Road and I the other. Said I where is your negro, Holiday, remarked, I believe I have KIlled Him, and I did not intend it if I could of helped it. He raised his Hoe on my and made fight, I believe I Shot the rong Barrel, M.r Holiday then said to the Boy git a horse and go Town for the Doctor, I said no lits go an dsee first if the Boy is dead, And when we got to the place the negro was dead, He might have Breathed Once, Holiday then ordered the Boy Moses, to go make a box and burey him and to go to Town and let his master know it, I told him no, that he must go to the Coroner and make affadavit of what he had done, and that the Coroner must Come and hold an Inquest--I also told him he must not let the Negro or any thing abou thim be loved, I then left, and returned in about an hour an dfound dead negro in the same position as when I first saw him, Signed J.M. Woodward. D.r James H. Normans Report. On the evening of the 24.th inst. I was called to examine the body of Jim, a slave supposed to have come to his death from the effects of Gun shot wounds, On the external & whole anterior portion of the body, no wounds of any discription were found, from the appearance of Blood in and about the Mouth, Concluded that there was considerable internal hemorage, as a further examiniation proved. He was lying on his back & having turned the body over I exposed to the view of the Jury, numerous Gun shot wounds extending from the superior borders of the scapular, downwards, on each side of the vertibal Column.... The lungs had also received several in their substance, Counting the points of enterance of all of the shot, there was Ninety. After making the examination, and on the Mature consideration I am of the opinion, that, from the great extent ofthe Gun shot wound, they did & was sufficient to produce death in a short time.
