Albert Steele Sworn Says he was at Mr SW Ruffs spring cleaning fish on the 23 day of July 1880 his dog bade[?] something looked and saw that it was a Woman Went and close enough to see who it was. And found her to be Amilia Ruff. Called to two or three times she made [?] no answer he then sent word to Mr Ruff that [?] Melisa[?] was lying down there and he did not Know whether she was dead or not. Robert Alston Sworn Says he lives at Mr Ruff in Fairfield County and that Amelia Rufin the Ded was his mother that on the 23d of July last was at Mr Ruffs house and got word that his mother was lying below the spring went down there and found Amelia Ruffin lying on the ground on her back. with her head stretched[?] back and her mouth full of something like Vomit also saw some Vomit on the ground by her. she was not breathing at all When he first reached her, taken her head on his arm and raised it she then drew two or three long breaths, it was then about eleven oclock in morning himself and some others carried her to the house some whiskey was put in her mouth & she then threw up some bloody looking stuf. never spoke. lived about one hour and a half. never heard any threats against the deceased life before she died heard rumors since she was buried that Anne[?] Harris had put something in decd Coffee to poison her. also rumors were circulated in the neighborhood that Cato [?] had poisoned her. James Heath[?] Sworn Say's that he is the Brother of the decd Amelia Rufin. have heard a great many reports since his sister was buried concuring her being poisoned. Say that Amilia Rufin decd died on the 23d of July buried on the 24th of the same month. Says that she was decaying very fast when buried. Wade Hurndon[?], Sworn Say's he knows Amelia Rufin the decd, that he [?] heard any threats made against her life before she died. Since Amelia was buried a great many rumors that Ann Harris & Cato Turnipsend[?] had made Threats against the decd life. [last line on this page illegible from fading] accused make any threats themselves. The talk has been going[?] on in the neighborhood ever since Amelia died Concerning the poisoning. S.W. Ruff Sworn Say's that Amilia Rufin the decd was his cook that on the 23rd of July of the present year Someone told him that Amelia was down and he said to some of his hands to go and bring her to the house about the time they got to the house Dr E. A. Gibson was passing he said he was going to Mr. Anderson & would be back in fifteen minutes. Witness Says he thinks the Doctor returned in about that time. before the Doctor got back he sent her a body. after the Doctor got back he examined her & examined her [?] several time after. [?] she never spoke after she was found She decd was apparently well she same morning she died was found about eleven Oclock & died at two Oclock the same day. Witness says that the decd had two attacks that year something like the attack that killed her. never heard any threats made against decd life dont think she had any[?] enemy. have heard this evening, dont believe[?] there was any [?] [?] [?]
