It was raining, or if such a thing is possible, raining and sleeting. I was going toward Cheraw, from Chesterfield, on highway No. 9 hen two light appeared in front of me, on my side of the road. I have a recollection of applying my brakes. It is a habit of mine to ride with my foot on the brake. The next I knew we hit, and when I got myself together I found I was not hurt, I got out. I heard northing from the other car except groaning. I got my flashlight out and flashed it in the other car, which was a coup. I saw immediately that one of the men was hurt. No one else was there and it was dark. The first person who came along was Bennett Moore. I asked him to go back toward Chesterfield and get the Sheriff, and he left going back toward Chesterfield. About the time he left another car came along (they say it was a taxi) and I asked to take Mr. Humphrey to the Doctor at Cheraw. I stayed there at the wreck until the Sheriff came some 15 or 20 minutes later.
