I heard the alarm that a man was in the well ... when I got here they were consulting about getting him out and I offered to go down after him and did go down. I found the gas before I got down had them to draw me out and tie me to a rope and then went down. Found him lying on his back there was life in the body. I spoke to him he made no reply. Occasionally he would groan. I fastened him as soon as I could had them to draw us up and when I got out I was helpless not conscious for some time. This is the third man that I have taken out of wells. Have no idea I could have lived 1/2 minute longer in the well. I started both times with a candle burning. The Candle went out both times am satisfied it was put out by the gas in the well.
